THE SCHOOL LIBRARY

The School Library is located on the first floor of the Resources Centre. It underwent major refurbishment in 2002 and provides a pleasant and stimulating environment for all ages and abilities.

Pupils in Years 7, 8, & 9 have one timetabled library period a fortnight, during which they are encouraged to widen their literacy skills, familiarise themselves with the resources available and acquire the necessary knowledge to access information.

The Library offers an ever expanding variety of resources, including:

Junior and senior fiction books
Reference books,
non-fiction books,
CDs, Audio tapes - fiction and non-fiction
Seven multi-media computers and colour printer.
Foreign language materials and tapes
Daily newspapers
Magazines
Art reference section
Quick Read area
Videos and DVD's

The Library is a popular venue at lunch times and after school, when pupils can exchange and renew books, undertake research projects and work in a quiet and studious atmosphere. The computers are linked to the school network and the Internet.

Two librarians offer invaluable assistance and guidance to pupils and are available at the following times:

9.00 am to 4.30 pm Monday and Wednesday

9.00 am to 4.00 pm Tuesday, Thursday and Friday

How the Library works

  • You are a member of the school library from your first day at Hall Mead. You will be registered on your 1st Library lesson.
  • The Library is open every day, throughout the school day on most days it will also stay open after school until at least 4.00pm
  • We will always try to help you find any information you need this does not mean we will find it.
  • If we do not have the information you are looking for we will try to obtain it for you, or suggest other places which could help you.
  • We will make sure that the school library is a place where you can study without distraction and read quietly.
  • You may borrow up to five items at any one time for reading and homework.
  • You can use a computer at one of two lunch time sessions (12.35 - 12.55pm and 12.55 - 1.15pm),. These are on a first come first served basis.

How you work in the Library

  • Please be courteous and remember other students are working keep noise and distractions to a minimum.
  • When visiting the library during your lessons hand your permission slip to the librarian before you begin work
  • Remember to have your books stamped before leaving the library
  • Remember to bring books back on or before they are due.
  • If a book is in demand by other students, please use and return it as soon as possible.
  • Look after the books and equipment that is in the library
  • Do not eat or drink in the library.
  • Finally anyone disrupting other library users will be asked to leave Hall Mead School Library
