Basic description and/or explanation of the causes and/or effects of an earthquake. Students may briefly describe what happened as a result of the earthquake but may not describe causes and may not explain. Basic. The student shows a limited awareness of style and audience. There may be some major errors in spelling, punctuation and grammar and the writing may have no paragraphs. Poor presentation. The student has not really attempted to present the writing in the style of a newspaper article. May have no paragraphs or pictures.

Sound description and explanation of causes and effects of an earthquake. Student may give detailed effects but may not explain the causes. Straightforward. Some awareness of structure, content and form. Some evidence of the basic rules of spelling, punctuation and grammar. May lack originality or show signs of copying from sources of information. Student attempts to make the writing look like a newspaper article. Attempts made to write in paragraphs and one or more pictures included but no map.

Sound description and explanation of causes and effects of an earthquake. Student may describe causes and effects although not necessarily in much detail. Student shows a fairly good understanding of the causes and effects and does attempt to explain. Adequately crafted. Obvious structure, content and form. Some aspects may not be entirely successful (e.g. handling of events may not run in a logical order, not really written in a newspaper style) Awareness of spelling, punctuation and grammar although not always correct. Student does write in paragraphs and includes pictures although they may not be referred to in the text. A map may be included but may not be clear or appropriate.

Good description and explanation of the causes and effects of an earthquake. Students describes the effects and explains the causes. Student may include some facts and figures. Well crafted. Good structure, content and form. The writing is obviously divided up into smaller paragraphs in a newspaper style. Writing is in an appropriate style for the audience. The student uses a good range of vocabulary and holds the readers attention. Good presentation. Student may write in paragraphs and columns but there are no subheadings. May include a map and pictures which are referred to in the text

Excellent description and explanation of the causes and effects of an earthquake. The student gives a detailed description of the effects of the earthquake including detailed facts and figures. They also explain in detail the causes of the earthquake showing a good understanding of the theory of tectonics. Highly crafted. An excellent structure, content and form. Clear beginning, middle and end. Virtually perfect in spelling, punctuation and grammar. Good sense of a newspaper style and a good range of vocabulary. A catchy headline and the reader will be engaged in reading descriptions and explanations. Excellent presentation. Not necessarily making use of Microsoft t thought has publisher, bubeen given to settling out the work in the style of a newspaper with paragraphs, columns and sub-headings. Also includes a map and relevant pictures.
