Welcome to the Art Department

The Art department plays an important role within the Schools and the Creative Arts faculty. It is directed by a structured programme, conforming to National Curriculum guidelines, which enhances the skills needed to give every child the opportunity to develop his or her creative abilities.

Art is an established foundation subject at Key Stage 3 designed to prepare students for Key Stage 4 and to equip them with a broadly based knowledge of the subject. This involves a thorough grounding in drawing, painting and observational study together with an introduction to design techniques in graphics textiles, and 3-D work as well as an introduction to Art History which is linked with each project.

We have introduced a sketch book scheme, into all years with the school supplying high quality books which, together with careful use and encouragement has already improved the performance at examination level. Year 7 books, together with an art handbook may be purchased at a cost of £1.00.

Our years 10 and 11 GCSE courses cover a general art syllabus as well as specialised areas of study, such as graphics and textiles. Both are subjects in which Hall Mead leads the Borough, where we bring professional insight and experience allied to the department's inventive and progressive outlook.

Graphics and textiles have an exciting impact on the Art department. The courses combine the traditional skills associated with subjects, together with creative and experimental approaches to the screen printing, dyeing, weaving, batik, collage, embroidery, sculpture, calligraphy and packaging. These courses include aspects of ceramics and 3d as part of the Art curriculum.

Our department has three studios for painting and drawing, one which is well equipped for textiles and another for ceramics. All three have state of the art computers for pupils and staff to use. We expect hard work and high standards if your children are to develop their creative talents to the full. We invite you to come and see the department and let us show you the quality of our work.

All Year 7 pupils require a homework sketch book and an art curriculum handbook. These may be acquired through the department at a low cost.

Pupils will also benefit from purchasing their own water colours
